Stage 01

Wet blue

Chrome-tanned hides preserved in a wet state — the intermediate stage between raw hide and crust. Primarily purchased by tanneries and converters who apply their own retanning and finishing process.

Every batch is graded by hand
Grade mix isn't automated — it's judged, hide by hide, by people who've done this for years. That's what A/D and E/H actually mean: a human decision on every piece before it ships.

Terminology

Key terms for buyers

New to sourcing leather? Here are the terms you'll encounter when specifying an order.

Full grain
Surface left completely intact — all natural marks and texture of the original hide visible. The highest quality layer.
Corrected grain
Surface buffed to remove blemishes, then pigment-coated. Uniform appearance, highly durable. Used in finished leather.
Split leather
The lower layer of the hide after splitting — no natural grain surface. Used for suede, linings, and industrial goods.
Substance / thickness
Measured in millimetres after shaving. Determines the weight and structure of the final product.
Selection / grade
Grade mix in the consignment — e.g. A/D = 50/50 top and lower grade hides. E/H indicates a more mixed grade range.
Wet blue
Chrome-tanned hide preserved wet — the stage before crust. Blue colour comes from chromium. For converter buyers.
Crust
Tanned and dried but not yet dyed or coated. The buyer's canvas — finish, colour, and surface applied downstream.
Aniline / semi-aniline
Aniline: dye only, no pigment — natural grain fully visible. Semi-aniline: minimal pigment added for colour consistency.
Pull-up effect
Oiled or waxed leather where colour lightens on flexing or scratching, revealing lighter layer beneath. Patinas naturally.
Fatliquoring
Oils and fats added between leather fibres during processing to keep them soft and flexible after drying.
Milling
Tumbling the leather in a drum to soften and create a natural pebble grain. Used in milled nappa and softy leathers.
MOQ
Minimum order quantity. For Haizum, we work with buyers from small sample orders through to full container quantities.
